How to use nic salts?

To use nic salts, fill a compatible refillable vape pod or tank with your chosen nic salt e-liquid. If you're using a new pod or coil, allow around 10 minutes for the e-liquid to soak into the cotton before vaping. Once ready, take slow, gentle puffs rather than long, powerful inhales. Nic salts are generally best suited to lower-powered vape kits designed for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping, such as refillable pod kits. Always check your device's recommended e-liquid ratio and choose a nicotine strength that suits your needs.

What is the best vape for nicotine salts?

The best vapes for nicotine salts are generally refillable pod kits designed for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping. These lower-powered devices work particularly well with 50/50 nic salt e-liquids, providing a discreet amount of vapour and a tighter, cigarette-style draw. Popular choices include the Vaporesso XROS 6 and OXVA NeXlim 2 Mini , both of which offer adjustable airflow and a choice of refillable pods to suit different vaping preferences. For nic salts, we'd typically recommend using a higher-resistance pod, such as 0.8Ω or 1.0Ω, where compatible with your device. The best option ultimately depends on your preferred draw and how much control you want over your vaping experience. You can explore our range of refillable pod kits to find a device that suits your needs.

What ohm coil is most suitable for nic salts?

Generally, higher-resistance coils are better suited to nic salts , particularly those rated at 0.8Ω, 1.0Ω or above. These coils operate at lower wattages and produce smaller amounts of vapour, making them a good choice for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping and higher nicotine strengths such as 10mg and 20mg. Lower-resistance coils, such as 0.4Ω or 0.6Ω, typically produce more vapour per puff, which can also increase the amount of nicotine inhaled. Using a 20mg nic salt with a lower-resistance coil, particularly at higher wattages, may deliver more nicotine than intended and feel too intense. However, lower-resistance pods can still be suitable for nic salts at reduced strengths, such as 5mg, provided the device and coil support the e-liquid. Ultimately, coil resistance is only one factor to consider . Your device's wattage, airflow and recommended e-liquid ratio also affect how it performs. Always follow the manufacturer's coil recommendations and choose a nicotine strength appropriate for your setup.

Are nic salts better for you?

Nic salts aren't necessarily healthier than traditional freebase nicotine e-liquids. Both contain nicotine, which is addictive, and neither is completely risk-free. The main difference is how the nicotine is formulated and how it feels when vaping, rather than one type being safer than the other. Nic salts generally provide a smoother throat hit at higher nicotine strengths, such as 10mg and 20mg. This can make them a more comfortable option for adult smokers switching to vaping, particularly those who need a higher nicotine strength to manage cravings. However, a smoother inhale doesn't mean nic salts are less harmful or contain less nicotine. If you're comparing vaping with smoking, the NHS confirms that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking cigarettes because it exposes users to fewer harmful chemicals. However, vaping is not harmless, and its long-term health effects are still being studied. For more information, read the NHS guide to vaping and smoking.

What's the difference between nic salts and vape juice?

Nic salts are actually a type of vape juice (also known as e-liquid). The term vape juice covers all e-liquids, including nicotine salts, freebase nicotine e-liquids and nicotine-free options. The main difference is the type of nicotine used and how the e-liquid performs when vaping. Nic salts use nicotine formulated with an acid to create a smoother throat hit, particularly at higher strengths such as 10mg and 20mg. They're commonly available in a 50VG/50PG ratio and are generally best suited to lower-powered refillable pod kits. Freebase nicotine e-liquids use a different form of nicotine and typically produce a more noticeable throat hit at the same nicotine strength. They're available in different VG/PG ratios, including 50/50 blends for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping and higher-VG options for devices designed to produce more vapour. Neither type is automatically better than the other. The right choice depends on your preferred nicotine strength, throat hit and the vape kit you're using.

What is the best nicotine salt in the UK

There's no single best nicotine salt in the UK, as the right e-liquid depends on your preferred flavours, nicotine strength and vaping preferences. Some vapers enjoy sweet, fruit-heavy blends, while others prefer menthol, tobacco or more traditional flavours. Some of the most popular nic salt brands in the UK include Elfliq by Elf Bar, Bar Juice 5000, Riot Bar EDTN and Lost Mary Nic Salts . These ranges offer a wide selection of flavours, with many inspired by familiar disposable vape flavours. For something different, Fruza Nic Salts offer 18 fruit-led, icy and sweet combinations, with 0mg, 5mg, 10mg and 20mg options across the range. If you're unsure where to start, we'd recommend exploring a few different flavour profiles rather than choosing based on brand alone. Choosing Your Nic Salt Strength

Nic salts are commonly available in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg strengths. The right concentration depends on whether you already vape, whether you're quitting smoking, and even how often you vape.

5mg

Lower Nicotine Strength

5mg nic salts contain 5mg of nicotine per millilitre of e-liquid (0.5%). They're a lower-strength option for vapers who prefer a lighter hit or are gradually reducing their nicotine intake.

Available in a variety of fruit, menthol, tobacco and sweet-inspired flavours, 5mg nic salts offer the familiar refillable pod experience at a lower nicotine level.

Explore 5mg Nic Salts

10mg

Medium Nicotine Strength

10mg nic salts contain 10mg of nicotine per millilitre (1%). This strength offers a middle option for vapers who find lower concentrations too weak but don't require the highest available strength.

Many popular nic salt ranges offer 10mg alongside 20mg, giving vapers the flexibility to choose their preferred nicotine strength without changing the flavour or vape device.

Explore 10mg Nic Salts

20mg

Higher Nicotine Strength

20mg nic salts contain 20mg of nicotine per millilitre (2%), the maximum nicotine concentration allowed for e-liquids under UK regulations. This is the highest-strength option commonly available in refillable nic salt ranges.

Many vapers moving from 20mg disposable vapes to refillable pod kits choose to explore this strength. Nic salt formulations generally provide a smoother throat hit than freebase nicotine e-liquids at comparable concentrations.

Explore 20mg Nic Salts

Nicotine strength refers to the amount of nicotine in each millilitre of e-liquid. The amount absorbed during vaping also depends on factors such as device output, puff duration and frequency of use.

Nic Salt Ratios Explained

When choosing a nic salt e-liquid, you'll often see numbers such as 50VG/50PG or 40VG/60PG on the bottle. These describe the balance of vegetable glycerine (VG) and propylene glycol (PG), two ingredients that affect the consistency, vapour production and throat hit of your e-liquid.

VG

Vegetable Glycerine

VG is the thicker ingredient in e-liquid and contributes to vapour production. Higher VG ratios generally produce more vapour and create a thicker liquid.

PG

Propylene Glycol

PG is thinner than VG and helps carry flavourings through the e-liquid. Higher PG ratios generally produce a thinner liquid and a more noticeable throat hit.

What Does 50VG/50PG Mean?

A 50VG/50PG ratio means the e-liquid contains an equal balance of VG and PG. This is one of the most common ratios found in nic salt e-liquids.

The balance provides a relatively thin consistency that's commonly suitable for refillable pod kits and lower-powered mouth-to-lung (MTL) devices. These kits typically use smaller coils designed for lower-viscosity e-liquids.

50VG / 50PG

50% VG 50% PG

An equal VG/PG balance commonly used in nic salt e-liquids.

What About Other VG/PG Ratios?

Not every nic salt uses a 50/50 blend. You may also come across ratios such as 40VG/60PG or 45VG/55PG, which contain slightly more PG than VG.

Higher VG e-liquids, such as 70VG/30PG blends commonly found in shortfill e-liquids , are generally better suited to compatible higher-powered devices. For nic salts, many refillable pod kits are designed to work with 50/50 or similar ratios. Always check your device and coil recommendations before choosing an e-liquid.

Nic Salts vs Freebase Nicotine: What's the Difference?

Nicotine salts (nic salts) and freebase nicotine are two forms of nicotine commonly used in e-liquids. While both provide nicotine, they differ in their formulation, throat hit and the strengths they're commonly available in. Understanding these differences can help you choose an e-liquid that suits your nicotine preferences, vaping style and vape kit.

Nic salts are particularly popular in refillable pod kits because they generally offer a smoother throat hit at higher nicotine strengths. Freebase nicotine, commonly found in traditional e-liquids, tends to produce a more noticeable throat hit as the strength increases. Both have their advantages, and choosing between them comes down to your preferences and the type of vaping experience you're looking for.

What Are Nicotine Salts?

Nicotine salts are a form of nicotine used in e-liquids, typically produced by combining nicotine with an organic acid, such as benzoic acid. This alters the formulation's pH and generally creates a smoother throat hit compared with freebase nicotine at a similar strength.

Because of this, nic salts are popular with people who prefer higher nicotine strengths without an overly harsh throat hit. They're commonly used in low-powered refillable pod kits for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping.

Key Characteristics

Generally smoother at higher nicotine strengths
Commonly available in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg
Suitable for many low-powered refillable pod kits
Popular for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping

What Is Freebase Nicotine?

Freebase nicotine is a widely used form of nicotine found in traditional e-liquids. It generally has a higher pH than nicotine salt formulations, producing a more noticeable throat hit, particularly as nicotine strength increases.

Freebase e-liquids come in different nicotine strengths and VG/PG ratios. Lower-strength, high-VG options are commonly used in powerful sub-ohm devices, while higher-PG formulations can also be suitable for lower-powered mouth-to-lung kits.

Key Characteristics

More noticeable throat hit at higher strengths
Available in a range of nicotine strengths
Suitable for MTL or DTL, depending on formulation
Used in both pod kits and sub-ohm devices

Nicotine Salt FAQs

Nic salts are a type of e-liquid that utilises nicotine salt, a compound that closely resembles the nicotine found in tobacco leaves. Nicotine salt is synthetically created by combining nicotine with either benzoic acid or salicylic acid to lower the pH of the e-liquid. A lower pH results in a smooth throat hit, as well as extending the shelf life of an e-liquid. Nicotine salts exploded in popularity due to their use in disposable vapes and pre-filled pod kits, making them the default option for many beginner vapers in the UK.

Salt nic juice delivers a smooth throat hit even at higher nicotine strengths, making it more accessible for ex-cigarette smokers who require a strong nicotine hit to ward off nicotine cravings quickly. Most nic salts are mixed to a 50VG/50PG ratio, making them suitable for beginner vapes like pod kits, starter kits and MTL vape pens.

Nicotine salts come in 3 standardised strengths: 5mg (0.5%), 10mg (1%) and 20mg (2%). You may be more familiar with seeing nicotine salts labelled in percentages due to many disposable vape and pre-filled pod manufacturers including the percentage instead of the numeric value. High-strength nic salt e-liquid is classified at 20mg, medium strength at 10mg and low strength at 5mg. Most, if not all, nicotine salt brands create their flavours in both 10mg & 20mg, whereas only a select number of brands and flavours are made in 5mg.

Because of the high nicotine strengths and instant absorption, only a low-powered vape is required. This makes nicotine salts ideally suited to small vape pens and all-in-one pod kits.
